A major project was being developed for an integrated port facility, as part of a national effort to improve the infrastructure in a reasonably sized Asian country. The client was leading its part of a large consortium of operating and passive interests.
A series of highly targeted questions levied by the client deal team pertained to a series of unknowns, including counter parties, partner affiliations, market exposure, regulatory trends and even tax policies.
Findings were generated in all of these areas which enabled the deal team to take informed positions on risk management and to support strong governance requirements at the various investor level boards.
Findings revealed a concealed equity interest that linked back to a state-owned entity in a country hostile to the host nation. As a result, the client saw that the investor configuration was changed.
A company needed to establish a robust market entry operation in an eastern European host country but did not have the in-house personnel to staff it.
The client did not want to depend upon promoters or sell-side interests.
Support for this early prospecting effort included identifying reliable local officials and support elements that met the high integrity requirements of the client.
Meetings were set up with the appropriate high level officials and a solid level of interest that was taken seriously locally and viewed as highly attractive to several national development programs was established.
The support provided had an invisible profile and was viewed as seamless with the company’s interests.
